Kenya Monitors Tropical Storm Ialy Sweeping Across Indian Ocean

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning of enhanced rainfall in parts of the country due to a tropical storm over the South-West Indian Ocean. 

The department is closely monitoring tropical storm IALY, which is expected to increase rainfall over the western half of Kenya and parts of the highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and its surrounding areas.

Additionally, large waves are anticipated over the Indian Ocean, leading to strong southerly winds affecting the eastern sector of the country. Heavy rainfall off the coast of Kenya is also expected, with potential inland propagation.

This warning follows an earlier alert from the Meteorological Department about heavy rainfall, strong winds, and ocean waves from Sunday through Wednesday. 

Meteorological Services Director David Gikungu noted that the heavy rainfall experienced over the weekend in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the highlands both west and east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, is set to continue from Sunday.

The rain is predicted to intensify until Monday evening across the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the coastal regions on Monday and Tuesday. 

As such, residents in Kisumu, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties are advised to be cautious.

Furthermore, areas of concern include West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale.
