Jackton Odhiambo, the primary suspect in the murder of LGBTQ+ activist Edwin ‘Chiloba’ Kiprotich Kiptoo, has been found guilty by the Eldoret High Court.

The verdict was delivered by Justice Reuben Nyakundi, who stated that the evidence conclusively established Odhiambo’s involvement in the crime. He is set to be sentenced on December 16, 2024.

The court heard that the offense took place on December 31, 2022, in Kimumu, near Eldoret. According to Justice Nyakundi, Odhiambo was the last person seen with Chiloba at an entertainment joint in Langas.

The two were seen leaving together on the night of the incident. Investigative findings revealed that Chiloba was sexually assaulted before being killed, with Odhiambo emerging as the main suspect.

Chiloba’s body was found on January 3, 2023, stuffed in a metallic box abandoned along the Kipkenyo-Katinga road in Eldoret.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the box being dropped off by individuals who sped away immediately afterward. Investigators later suspected that Chiloba was murdered in an apartment in Chepkolel, Moiben, where he lived with Odhiambo, who was allegedly his boyfriend.

Following the discovery of Chiloba’s body, five suspects were arrested and arraigned. However, only Odhiambo was charged with murder, while the other four suspects were released.

Despite initially pleading not guilty and applying for bail, Odhiambo later withdrew his bail application.

The case drew widespread attention, both locally and internationally, given Chiloba’s activism within the LGBTQ+ community and the brutal nature of his death.
