Houses Built On Govt Land Demolished In Kilifi

The County Government of Kilifi has carried out a demolition operation in the Mabirikani area, resulting in the destruction of property worth millions of shillings. 

County enforcement officers, along with other officials, raided land belonging to the Kilifi social services department, allegedly grabbed by former government officials. 

Despite notices given to the grabbers, they did not comply, leaving tenants to suffer as they hurriedly removed their belongings before the demolition commenced at around 5 am, facilitated by the use of a grader.

Among the affected properties were buildings reportedly owned by a former senior social services officer and a former County physical planner. 

Dora Chovu, one of the affected individuals, expressed anguish as she watched her retirement investments being destroyed, claiming to have taken a loan of Ksh. 3 million for the construction of rental houses and her retirement home. 

While some residents supported the demolition, citing the reclaiming of government land, others criticized the timing and impact on affected individuals. 

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mungaro defended the demolition, stating that multiple notices had been issued prior to the operation, emphasizing that the land was earmarked for the construction of the county headquarters.
