Video footage obtained by Citizen Digital from the scene showed multiple people stranded on top of the overturned boat, while others struggled to swim in the tumultuous waters. 

Shocked by the incident, local residents stood helplessly on the banks of the swollen river, some wailing and calling for assistance.

Another video captured the ill-fated boat attempting to navigate the swollen Tana River, being swept away by the strong currents before capsizing. 

The boat was overloaded, and a second boat managed to make it across the turbulent river.

Spectators by the roadside watched in distress as the boat capsized. Some passengers attempted to swim through the rushing floodwaters, but many were overwhelmed by the powerful currents. Reports to Citizen Digital suggest that 23 people are currently missing as rescue efforts continue.

The Tana River has burst its banks due to heavy rainfall in the region, causing severe flooding.
