In a verdict delivered by Lady Justice Grace Nzioka on Friday, Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, has been found guilty of the murder of businesswoman Monica Nyawira Kimani.
The gruesome incident occurred on the night of September 19, 2018, at her residence in Lamuria Gardens, Nairobi.
Lady Justice Grace Nzioka stated that the prosecution presented compelling evidence, establishing beyond reasonable doubt that Jowie was responsible for Monica's death.
According to the judge, Jowie stole Dominic Bisera's ID two days before the crime, armed himself with a gun, disguised himself with traditional attire, gained access to Monica's apartment, committed the murder, changed clothes afterward, and disposed of the incriminating garments.
Conversely, former TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, who was jointly charged with Irungu, was acquitted of the murder charge.
The judge noted that the evidence against Maribe did not place her at the scene of the crime on the fatal night.
However, Maribe was found guilty of providing contradictory information regarding how Jowie sustained a gunshot wound, an offense labeled as giving misleading information to a public servant.
While Justice Nzioka affirmed the lack of sufficient evidence to convict Maribe of murder, she emphasized that the decision rested with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on further action.
As a result, Joseph Irungu's bond has been revoked, and he will remain in custody until March 8, 2024, when the court will deliver the final sentencing.
