The primary suspect in the murder of 24-year-old Starlet Wahu Mwangi is now the focus of an extended investigation into potential serial killings, both within and outside Nairobi.
This development stems from another victim's harrowing account at the Makadara sub-county police headquarters, recounting her attempted murder by the suspect, identified as John Ongoa Matara, whom she met through a dating site.
The investigation took a significant turn on Saturday as additional victims stepped forward, providing statements detailing assaults and attempts on their lives by the 30-year-old Matara.
In a chilling narrative, one victim shared her encounter with Matara on a dating site, describing how he led her to an Airbnb where he violently assaulted her, demanding access to her financial accounts.
"I met this guy on a dating site... he seemed so nice and even took me to an Airbnb. In the middle of the night, he started strangling me and even asked for my M-Pesa statements," she said, revealing the intensity of the assault.
Preliminary findings from the police suggest that Matara may be a serial killer, specifically targeting women through online dating platforms.
"He did bad things to me and asked for my accounts and asked me to transfer the money to him," she added, shedding light on the disturbing nature of the assailant's actions.
The anonymous victim positively identified Matara as the perpetrator, confirming the match with the individual linked to Starlet Wahu's murder.
These shocking revelations follow the burial of Wahu, who was tragically murdered in an Airbnb in Nairobi's South B. Her lifeless body was discovered shortly after checking into the apartment on Wednesday night, and she was laid to rest at her parents' home in Kamulu, Ruai.
Video surveillance from Papino apartments captured Wahu and Matara entering an elevator on Wednesday, disembarking on the fourth floor, and proceeding to the room they reportedly rented for the night.
Makadara OCPD Judy Nyongesa recounted the timeline, stating, "Walibook apartment and at 4 am hicho kisa kikatokea."
Police found Wahu's lifeless body in a pool of blood inside the apartment after the security at the Airbnb reported the incident.
Matara hastily left the premises on Thursday morning in blood-stained clothes and was subsequently arrested at Mbagathi hospital, where he sought treatment for a self-inflicted stab wound to his stomach—an apparent attempt to mislead investigators.
A post-mortem examination revealed that Wahu died from excessive bleeding caused by stabbing.
Police reports highlighted signs of a struggle between Wahu and her killer, with the scene appearing bloody, disarrayed, and chaotic.
Additionally, police discovered alarming items at the crime scene, including HIV testing kits, used condoms, marijuana, alcohol, and a blood-stained kitchen knife believed to be the murder weapon.
