  • Concerns rise as disappearances and deaths occur amid ongoing anti-government protests.

President William Ruto has addressed the shocking discovery of more than ten mutilated bodies found in an abandoned quarry in Mukuru Kwa Njenga informal settlements.

Speaking on Saturday, July 13, 2024, during the second day of the operation, the President ordered Homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate the deaths immediately.

Ruto, speaking to residents of Elgeyo Marakwet, acknowledged that he is fully briefed on the matter and that investigations have commenced.

"In Nairobi, about nine bodies, all female, have been found, with five more bodies retrieved on Saturday. The government is still investigating the matter," Ruto stated.

He emphasized his administration's commitment to bringing the culprits to justice, declaring, "Those who were involved in the death of those kids in the quarry have to pay. They must be found, and action taken against them."

Controversy surrounds the number of bodies retrieved on Friday, with police reporting six female bodies, while eyewitnesses and rights organizations claim the number was nine, with an additional five bodies found on Saturday.

The discovery comes amid ongoing anti-government protests over the RejectFinanceBill2024, during which several social media influencers have been abducted, later found in police custody, or abandoned far from where they were seized.

Some of those who disappeared were later found dead, raising concerns among critics that the country may be reverting to the dark days of extrajudicial killings.
