United States Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, has announced her resignation. Whitman, who has held this diplomatic role since 2022, shared the news in a statement on Wednesday, indicating she had submitted her resignation to President Joe Biden.
The announcement comes just days after Donald Trump's victory in the recent U.S. presidential election.
In her message, Whitman expressed her appreciation for the chance to serve, describing it as an “honor and privilege” to strengthen the partnership between the United States and Kenya.
“Today, I announced to my team at the U.S. embassy that I submitted my resignation to President Biden.
It has been an honor and privilege to serve the American people through strengthening our partnership with Kenya,” she stated.
Reflecting on her tenure, Whitman highlighted key achievements in enhancing U.S.-Kenya relations.

She spoke proudly of a “people-centered agenda” that has aimed to save lives, boost security, and create economic opportunities for both Kenyans and Americans.
“From delivering emergency funding to address catastrophic flooding in 2023 to our ongoing fight against malaria, HIV, and MPOX, the U.S. government prioritizes the health and welfare of our friends in Kenya,” she added.
Whitman also emphasized the collaborative efforts between the two nations to foster economic growth.
She noted that her arrival in 2022 brought a renewed focus on expanding trade ties, as shown in her “Why Africa, Why Kenya?” presentations to American businesses and entrepreneurs. This initiative, she said, has led to record-high U.S. trade, jobs, and investments in Kenya.
Additionally, the U.S. embassy responded to rising consular service demand, significantly reducing non-immigrant visa appointment wait times from over two years to about two months.
She further acknowledged the efforts of her embassy team, expressing confidence in the ongoing strength of the U.S.-Kenya relationship.
“Our relations are stronger than ever, and I am confident this trajectory will continue,” Whitman remarked.
“I will depart Kenya full of gratitude for the team that has worked tirelessly on my behalf, for the opportunity to serve my country, and for the friendship offered by the government and the people of the beautiful Republic of Kenya.”
As she prepares to leave, Whitman voiced her belief that the 60-year partnership between Nairobi and Washington will only grow stronger, continuing to benefit the citizens of both nations by promoting prosperity, health, security, and democracy.
