The opening day of the 2024 CAC Africa Road Cycling Championships set the stage with electrifying time trial performances, though the intense pace proved challenging for Kenya's cyclists.
In the Women's Elite race, experienced rider Tabu Masiga Kendra secured 6th place, closely followed by team captain Nancy Akinyi, who finished 7th. Both athletes are now gearing up to lead Kenya's charge in tomorrow's mixed relay.
Reflecting on the race, Kendra shared, "It was a tough opening day, but we are hoping to do well tomorrow. Most of us struggled with time since we are competing at this level for the first time, but we should be fine as the tournament wears on."
Veteran cyclist David Kinjah expressed his enthusiasm about Kenya hosting such a prestigious event. "We are very excited to have a tournament of this magnitude opening in our country. We hope it is the beginning of better things in our cycling fraternity," he remarked.

In the Junior Men’s race, Eritrea's Keven Teklemariam dominated the 22.5km course, clocking an impressive 14:18.8.
He was followed closely by South Africa's Alexander Erasmus. Kenya’s Billy Mbolo Mangwana finished 14th. Meanwhile, Kenya’s Chepkemboi Sherry placed 9th in the Junior Women’s category.
In other results, Peter Kamau finished 9th in the Men’s Under-23 race, which was won by Uganda's Paul Lomuria.
