KDF engineers began constructing the Gatundu-Munyu road in Thika to improve local infrastructure ahead of KDF Day.
The 2.5 km road will enhance access and support economic growth, with future projects planned for the area.
The Kenya Army Corps of Engineers has officially commenced the construction of the Gatundu-Munyu road in Kamagambo, Thika Town Constituency, Kiambu, as part of the Kenya Defence Forces' (KDF) Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiative.
This infrastructure project aims to enhance relations with the local community in the lead-up to KDF Day, set to be celebrated on 14th October 2024.
The project will improve a 2.5-kilometer stretch of road from the Thika-Garissa Highway to Mountain View Phase Two.
Key enhancements include murram layering, the installation of drainage systems, and road paving, which will notably improve accessibility during the rainy season when the road often deteriorates.

The construction is being led by Brigadier Victor Mburu, Commander of the Combat Engineers Brigade, and Brigadier Joseph Mutua, Commander of the Construction Engineers Brigade, who have committed to delivering a high-quality project.
Local community chairman Elias Munyiri expressed gratitude for the KDF's swift response to their call for assistance, noting that the road had posed significant challenges, especially during the rainy season.
Brigadier Mburu acknowledged the community’s request and emphasized that the roadworks were approved after thorough consultations with all stakeholders.
Brigadier Mutua highlighted the road’s importance in facilitating economic growth through improved movement of goods and people.
He also announced plans for additional KDF-led infrastructure projects in the nearby Makongeni and Kiganjo areas, further benefiting the Thika community.
The launch event was attended by senior KDF officials, local government representatives, and leaders from the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).
