Babu Owino responded to Ugandan President Museveni’s accusations by emphasizing the need for empathetic leadership and solutions to poverty in Africa.
Owino called for visionary leadership that ensures access to essential services like healthcare and education across the continent.
The accusations, which emerged during the launch of Raila Odinga's bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship at State House, Nairobi, have attracted considerable political attention and media scrutiny.
In his response, Owino began by expressing his gratitude to President Museveni for supporting Odinga’s AUC Chairmanship bid.
He then shifted focus to broader issues concerning youth and the future of leadership in Africa.
"As a young leader in Kenya, having grown up in poverty, I know what it means to lack," Owino stated, drawing from his personal experiences to highlight the importance of empathetic leadership.
He emphasized that leaders must understand the struggles of ordinary citizens and be committed to finding solutions to these challenges.
Owino articulated his vision for a democratic society where every child, whether in Kenya or Uganda, has access to essential services like healthcare and education.
He stressed the need for leaders who can uplift their people from the grips of poverty and oppression.

"We must offer alternative visions of leadership that will save Africans from the shackles of oppression and the jaws of poverty," Owino concluded, calling for visionary leadership across the continent.
President Museveni’s remarks had accused Owino of collaborating with anti-National Resistance Movement (NRM) groups in Uganda, adding an unexpected layer of tension to the event, which was intended to rally support for Odinga’s AUC bid. Museveni stated, “There’s a character called Babu.
I always see Babu dealing with anti-NRM groups. I have never accused him, but now I am accusing Babu.”
Owino’s measured response has been perceived as an effort to shift the conversation toward addressing the pressing issues facing ordinary Africans, such as poverty and access to essential services.
His comments align with the core themes of Raila Odinga's campaign for AUC Chairmanship, which advocates for inclusive development, democratic governance, and pan-African solidarity.
