Rebecca Miano: Former CS Poised to Become Kenya’s First Female Attorney General

Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano may become Kenya's first female Attorney General following her nomination by President William Ruto on Friday. 

If confirmed, Miano will succeed Justin Muturi, the seventh person to hold the AG position since Kenya's independence.

The list of previous Attorneys General includes Charles Njonjo (1963-1979), James Karugu (1980-1981), Joseph Kamere (1981-1983), Mathew Muli (1983-1991), Amos Wako (1991-2011), Professor Githu Muigai (2011-2018), and Kihara Kariuki (2018-2022).

In her new role, Miano will be tasked with formulating legal policies and overseeing the administration of Kenya's legal system.

She previously served as the Trade Cabinet Secretary, a role she held until the recent cabinet reshuffle. 

Additionally, Miano's prior experience includes her tenure as Cabinet Secretary for the East African Community, where she worked on regional development initiatives.

Before entering the cabinet, Miano was the first female Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC, a position she held for five years. 

With over three decades in the energy sector, she is recognized as a prominent business leader and public servant.

Miano founded the Pink Energy Forum to tackle gender issues within the energy sector and has received several accolades, including being named Chairperson of the Year by Women on Boards in 2021 and receiving the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW) and Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear for her contributions to public service. 

She holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree, a Diploma in Law, and post-graduate studies in Comparative Law, and is a member of the Law Society of Kenya. 

She has also served on the Finance Committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK).
