High Court Suspends Police Ban on Demos in Nairobi CBD

 In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary…

  • The High Court has temporarily suspended the ban on public demonstrations in Nairobi CBD, imposed by Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.

  • This decision follows a petition by the Katiba Institute, arguing for the right to peaceful assembly without fear of excessive force from the police.

The High Court has temporarily halted Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja's decision to prohibit planned public demonstrations by Kenyan youth in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD).

The ban, announced on Wednesday due to concerns over property damage and loss of life during recent protests, was suspended on Thursday afternoon by Justice Bahati Mwamuye.

This suspension will remain in effect pending the court's review of a petition filed by the Katiba Institute challenging the ban.

Justice Mwamuye's order, issued pending further court proceedings, prohibits the National Police Service from enforcing the ban outlined in the press release signed by Acting IG Douglas Kanja.
