Following a landslide at the Hillo mine in Dabel, Marsabit County, five bodies have been recovered, with ongoing search and rescue efforts amidst fears that more miners remain trapped beneath the rubble. 

The mining field, previously closed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki in March due to deadly clashes over mining rights, has seen locals alleging continued illegal mining activities facilitated by corrupt security officials despite the shutdown.

Tensions at the Hillo mining site escalated two months ago, resulting in the deaths of three individuals following disputes among rival factions of miners. 

Sources familiar with the situation attribute the conflicts to misunderstandings among miners that spiraled into intergroup violence.

In response, Marsabit County Commissioner Norbert Komora ordered the immediate closure of the mine, giving miners a 24-hour ultimatum to vacate.
