Section Of Embu-Meru Highway Closed After Cracks Emerge On Ikong’u Bridge

 In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary…

  • Cracks on the Ikong'u bridge along the Embu-Meru highway prompt its closure, with traffic redirected to alternative routes due to soil erosion.

  • Heavy rains across the country exacerbate the situation, resulting in widespread devastation, including the Mai Mahiu tragedy with 71 confirmed fatalities, landslides in Murang'a claiming six lives, and displacement of thousands, totaling over 190,000 affected individuals nationwide.

Early on Tuesday morning, a portion of the bustling Embu-Meru highway faced closure as cracks emerged on the Ikong'u bridge in the Kiagima area of Embu West sub-county.

The appearance of cracks, accompanied by soil erosion, prompted authorities to shut down the affected section, diverting traffic to alternative routes.

Embu County Police Commander Nicholas Maina advised motorists to comply with traffic police directives for rerouting.

This development coincides with widespread heavy rainfall across the country, exacerbating the already dire situation.

The rains have unleashed havoc, resulting in a series of disasters and loss of life. The recent tragedy in Mai Mahiu saw 71 confirmed fatalities and 28 individuals reported missing following a destructive flood during the late hours of Monday night.

In Murang'a, landslides in the Mathioya area claimed six lives and left several others injured.

Overall, the toll from the floods stands at 169 lives lost and 102 individuals injured across affected regions.

The displacement of at least 30,099 households has affected around 150,495 people nationwide.

Flash floods in Sindo, Homa Bay County, displaced 161 households, adding to the distress caused by heavy rainfall.
