Marathon Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum To Be Buried Next Week, Family Announces

The late world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum will be laid to rest on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the family residence in Kaptagat, as confirmed by his relatives. 

The family initiated burial preparations by forming a funeral committee tasked with coordinating arrangements and updating the public.

Kiptum met his tragic demise in a fatal road accident on Sunday night in the Kaptagat area along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road, alongside his Rwandese coach, Gervais Hakizimana.

An autopsy conducted on Hakizimana's body at Eldoret Hospital, led by Dr. Benson Macharia and witnessed by the coach's family and Kiptum's widow, Assenete Kiptum, lasted an hour. However, the results were not disclosed.

A fundraising event is scheduled for Saturday, February 17, at Kiptum's residence in Chepsamoo Village, Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Meanwhile, there are growing calls for an inquiry into the accident, with DAP-Kenya leader and former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa urging a thorough investigation into its circumstances.
