The global athletics community is reeling from the shocking news of the death of Ugandan steeplechaser Benjamin Kiplagat, discovered lifeless in Kimumu, Eldoret on Saturday night.

Kiplagat, a distinguished athlete and the 2008 World Junior 3,000m steeplechase silver medalist, met a tragic end on his way home in Kimumu.

Authorities, led by Moiben Sub-county police commandant Stephen Okal, responded to a public report of an accident around 5:00 am on Sunday.

Upon arrival, they found Kiplagat at the wheel, with stab wounds to his chest and a deep cut on his neck. The incident involved a collision with a motorcycle, which investigators believe was strategically used to block Kiplagat before the perpetrators fled.

“We are still investigating the incident to ascertain what really happened, but what we can confirm is that the man found dead is an international athlete called Benjamin Kiplagat,” stated Okal.

A native of Marakwet East, Kiplagat had been training in Eldoret before his planned participation in various competitions in Uganda.

His athletic journey included notable appearances at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, where he narrowly missed the podium, the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea (finishing 10th), and the 2012 Olympic Games in London, United Kingdom (reaching the semifinals).

Kiplagat also secured a bronze medal at the Africa Championships in Porto Novo, Benin, in 2012. However, subsequent events, including the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, China, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar, saw him facing challenges in the heats.
