DCI Unveils Photos of Company Staff Who Vanished with Sh94 Million from Supermarket

The police officers assigned to accompany the cash reported that they had not witnessed the departure of the vehicle.

Suspects linked to Ksh.94 Million money heist on November 6, 2023

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released photographs of two Wells Fargo employees who vanished with Sh94 million on Monday morning.

The individuals, identified as Daniel Mungai Mugetha (crew commander) and Anthony Nduiki Waigumo (driver), absconded with the company's truck shortly after loading the money box, leaving behind the awaiting police escort vehicle.

Unaware that truck no. KBA 517T, which they were supposed to escort, had departed, the armed escort team inquired with the management about the delay in loading.

However, at that point, neither the truck nor its crew members could be located. The police escort was only made aware of the vehicle's departure nearly an hour later.

The truck was bound for a bank on Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi, carrying funds belonging to Quickmart Supermarket. Law enforcement in Lang'ata was mobilized to pursue the audacious pair, but all they discovered was the abandoned empty truck in South C.

A specialized operations team has since been deployed to track down the suspects. Police suspect that this incident may be an inside job and have visited the suspects' rural homes as part of the ongoing investigation.

Law enforcement officials expressed hope of recovering the money and apprehending the suspects for prosecution.

This heist is the latest in a series of similar incidents following a period of calm in the industry. Notably, in February 2010, a daring heist took place when a cash-in-transit crew vanished with over Sh300 million in Mombasa, leaving their police escorts stranded.

In September 2019, individuals posing as police officers stole 13 bags containing Sh72 million from a bank-owned van in Nairobi.

These impostors made off with the cash from the firm's headquarters and an ATM in Nairobi West. The staff, believing they were being escorted by cash-in-transit police officers, later discovered that the men were robbers who confiscated their phones and transferred the cash to another vehicle, a Toyota Noah.
