In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary…
The UDA plans to replace Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua with Kithure Kindiki, pending a court ruling on Gachagua's impeachment.
Gachagua, who disputes the Senate's decision, intends to fight to retain his position despite calls from UDA for him to accept the outcome.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has announced plans to reorganize its top leadership, pending a court ruling on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment.
UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar, speaking to the press on Tuesday, explained that the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) is awaiting the court's verdict before suspending Gachagua and appointing Kithure Kindiki, who has been nominated as the next Deputy President.
“Once the court process is concluded, we will convene as a party to ensure that the Deputy Party leader is replaced by the new appointee,” Omar stated.
Omar further suggested that Gachagua should accept the situation and withdraw from his court battles, encouraging him to pursue his political interests outside the judicial system.
"If he wants to regroup and re-organize politically, we wish him all the best, but let us move on," he remarked.
Kithure Kindiki was nominated by President William Ruto on October 18, following the Senate’s decision to impeach Gachagua.
However, Gachagua’s legal team has argued that the impeachment process was tainted by ill intentions, particularly as the Senate passed its judgment while Gachagua was hospitalized.
Despite the impeachment, Gachagua maintains that he is the legitimate Deputy President and has vowed to fight vigorously to remain in office.
