 In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary…

  • President William Ruto is set to attend the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, focusing on multilateral reforms and climate action.

  • He will advocate for Africa's interests, including equitable climate financing and increased representation in global institutions.

President William Ruto is set to depart for the United States on Friday night to attend the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

This prominent global forum brings together world leaders to address pressing international issues, with a key focus on sustainable development, global governance, and climate action.

During the assembly, President Ruto will advocate for comprehensive reforms of multilateral institutions, including the United Nations, to ensure they effectively address current global challenges.

He will emphasize the need for accelerated reforms, particularly in areas like climate change, debt burden, and democratic governance.

At the ‘Summit of the Future,’ a UN-organized event, the president will highlight the inadequacies of the current multilateral system in tackling interrelated crises and call for a more democratic, transparent, and responsive global order.

His vision is for a 'Pact for the Future' that promotes equity and addresses the specific needs of Kenya, Africa, and other developing nations.

President Ruto will also engage in high-level discussions on bridging the digital divide and promoting inclusivity within the digital economy.

He plans to focus on equitable management of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data governance.

Additionally, Ruto will hold meetings with world leaders and international organizations to explore opportunities for collaboration in trade, investment, and diplomacy.

These discussions will aim to enhance Kenya’s global partnerships, particularly in areas like climate action, renewable energy, and digital innovation.

A key part of his agenda includes a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss Kenya's role as host of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the ongoing UN Office capital project in Nairobi, and Kenya’s leadership in the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, which promotes peace and security.

For Kenya and Africa, UNGA 79 offers a significant platform to advocate for equitable climate financing and garner international support for initiatives like the Nairobi Declaration on the Africa Climate Summit, the African Green Industrialisation Initiative, and the African Renewable Energy Strategy.

As a leading voice in Africa, President Ruto will push for greater African representation in global institutions like the UN Security Council and the International Monetary Fund, ensuring that Africa’s interests are not only heard but acted upon in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable world order.
