Eldoret Forex Scam: Victims Protest as Police Delay Mastermind’s Arrest

 In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary…

  • Eldoret residents protested against police inaction after losing money in the Springmark Investment scam, accusing authorities of colluding with the suspect.

  • Police assured that investigations are ongoing, with DCI officers from Nairobi now handling the case.

Eldoret residents who lost their money in the Springmark Investment scam took to the streets on Monday, protesting against what they perceive as police indifference in prosecuting the case.

The victims, frustrated by the lack of action, marched to the county commander's office, demanding answers on why the suspect had not been apprehended despite numerous complaints and police reports.

The protesters accused the police of colluding with the suspect to deny them justice. One victim, Emily Wanjala, expressed the group's frustration, saying,

"We are pleading with the government to help us recover our money. Every time we come here to file reports, they just give us an OB number, claiming they are searching for him."

In response, Benjamin Mwanthi, the county police commander, assured the victims that the matter is being investigated.

He advised Uasin Gishu residents to be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true and reassured them that the case is in good hands.

He mentioned that the statements provided by the victims would be used in the investigation and that the officers handling the case are actively working on it.

The residents, however, allege that senior police officers and an influential government figure are interfering with the case, enabling the suspect to evade custody whenever arrested.

Mwanthi countered these claims, stating that the case has been taken over by DCI officers from Nairobi, who are continuing their investigations into the forex scam that reportedly cost investors millions of shillings.

He added that investigators are closing in on the suspects and urged the residents to allow the legal process to unfold.

The residents vowed to hold demonstrations in Eldoret town every Monday until the main suspect, Ambrose Makech Abuti, and his accomplices are arrested.

Abuti, the Eldoret-based proprietor of Springmark Investment, is accused of duping unsuspecting investors into believing he could help them grow their money before disappearing with deposits totaling hundreds of millions of shillings.
