An airliner carrying 62 people crashed in Brazil on Friday, with all passengers presumed dead, according to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. 

Video footage shared on social media captured the moment the plane plunged behind a cluster of trees, followed by a large plume of black smoke.

The plane, operated by Voepass, had taken off from Cascavel in the state of Parana and was en route to Sao Paulo's main international airport when it crashed in the town of Vinhedo, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo. 

The airline could not provide further details on the cause of the crash, which involved an ATR 72-500 turboprop, a model jointly owned by Airbus and the Italian aerospace group Leonardo.

During an event, President Lula asked for a minute of silence for the victims, acknowledging that all those on board were presumed dead. 

Sao Paulo's state fire brigade quickly dispatched seven crews to the crash site, as reported in a social media post.
