Heavy rainfall on Tuesday night in Makutano area, Kirinyaga County, has resulted in significant losses for over 20 families and traders.

Among the worst affected are residents along the Makutano-Mwea highway, where inadequate water drainage systems originating from Mbeere area in Embu County exacerbated the situation.

Former teacher Rachel Njeri Chege lamented the destruction caused by the flooding, revealing that her seven-foot perimeter wall, valued at over Ksh.100,000, was swept away by the forceful water currents.

Concerns have also been raised about the contamination of floodwaters with human waste, heightening fears of waterborne diseases such as cholera.

Anger among residents is directed towards the contractor responsible for constructing the Kenol-Marwa dual carriage, as blocked culverts are blamed for exacerbating the flooding.

Simon Ngure expressed frustration, noting that numerous letters were sent to the contractor, Kirinyaga governor, and the area MCA prior to the onset of heavy rains, but to no avail.

Residents have previously urged Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau to raise the issue in the Senate, particularly in light of the ongoing construction of a flyover in Makutano, which they argue diverts water into nearby residential areas.

While acknowledging the necessity of development projects, such as the flyover, residents insist that proper water channeling is essential.
