The nation mourns the tragic loss of Kelvin Kiptum, the World marathon record holder, and his coach Gervais Hakizimana. The devastating news has deeply impacted the country.

The family of Coach Gervais Hakizimana has arrived in the country, grappling with the sudden loss of their beloved son. 

Joan Chelimo, Coach Hakizimana's widow, shared her profound sadness over the unexpected passing of her husband in an interview with Citizen TV.

Chelimo recounted receiving the heartbreaking news from a friend on that fateful night. She had last spoken to Coach Hakizimana on Sunday before the tragic accident occurred. He had assured her of calling later in the evening, only for news of the accident to shatter their plans.

Recalling their last conversation, Chelimo revealed her husband's determination to assist Kiptum in breaking the world record, a goal they ultimately achieved. 

She expressed the emptiness she feels now, constantly checking her phone in the hope of her husband's call, as they used to communicate frequently.

The incident occurred on Sunday night, claiming the lives of both Kiptum and Coach Hakizimana in a road accident on the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road near Kaptagat. 

Kiptum's untimely demise came six days after the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) officially recognized his record-breaking time of 2:00:35.

Kiptum had made headlines by surpassing Eliud Kipchoge's world record in Chicago last October, completing the marathon distance in two hours and 35 seconds.
