2027 World Athletics Championships Set to Take Place in Beijing

Beijing has been selected as the host city for the 2027 World Athletics Championships, as announced by track and field's governing body on Wednesday. 

This marks Beijing's second time hosting the event, following its previous hosting in 2015. The upcoming World Athletics Indoor Championships will take place in the Chinese city of Nanjing next year.

Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics, cited commercial factors in the decision, noting that China's broadcast consumption of the elite Diamond League circuit in 2023 reached a staggering 368.9 million, making it the highest globally. 

With a population exceeding 1.4 billion, China represents one of the largest sports markets globally.

Coe emphasized the significant opportunity to expand the sport and its fan base in one of the world's largest commercial markets. 

The most recent World Athletics Championships took place in Budapest in August, with Tokyo slated to host the event in 2025.
